DUBOIS (Paul-Élie) - CHEVRILLON (André). - Lot 106
DUBOIS (Paul-Élie) - CHEVRILLON (André). [The Puritans of the South Algerian Desert]. S.l., circa 1940. - Mock-up in-4, 323 x 250: (4 blank ff.), 215 pp. (2 blank ff.), blank cover. In sheets, filled cover, cardboard folder. Precious original artwork designed by engraver and printer Pierre Bouchet for André Chevrillon's Les Puritains du désert sud-algérien, published by Editions du Livre contemporain. Begun in 1938 and completed in 1944, the book was enhanced by illustrations by painter Paul-Élie DUBOIS (1886-1949). The 215-page layout is a fascinating testament to the craftsmanship and creativity that went into its creation. A printed text, virtually identical on every page, has been carefully cut, pasted and enhanced with 79 original drawings by Dubois. Executed mainly in pencil and watercolor, these color drawings directly animate most of the pages, while others, cut and pasted, are integrated with precision. Five unfinished sketches, plus two preparatory sheets for pages 190-191, are relegated to the back of the book. Quite different from the final version published in 1944, this mock-up reveals an alternative, evolving version of the work: some drawings are replaced, others moved around, offering a glimpse of the hesitations and aesthetic choices made along the way. Handwritten annotations, mainly in the printer's hand and more rarely in Dubois', meticulously specify the positioning and dimensions of the illustrations. A rare and precious piece, this maquette sheds light on the process of creating an illustrated book.
