Slightly recessed chest of drawers - Lot 252
Slightly recessed chest of drawers inlaid with rosewood, satinwood, mahogany and green-tinted light wood, decorated with trompe l'œil cubes and a wolf's tooth frieze. It opens with five drawers in three rows, the first of which is in three parts and two without a crosspiece, applied with ribbon and ring escutcheons. Simulated fluted uprights resting on sheathed feet. Stamped by L. Moreau and JME on the left and right rear jambs. Louis XVI period H. 88 cm - W. 126.5 cm - D. 56 cm (grey Sainte-Anne marble top, key attached) Louis Moreau was awarded the title of Master in 1764. He bought out the À la descente des Tuileries business, employing renowned craftsmen such as Bircklé, Foullet and Topino. He only made some of the furniture he sold himself. This type of checkerboard marquetry is characteristic of cabinetmaker Antoine Foullet, who also made a two-drawer chest of drawers with similar decoration, stamped with his name (Versailles sale 1986).
