MIRBEAU (Octave) - RODIN (Auguste). - Lot 207
MIRBEAU (Octave) - RODIN (Auguste). Le Jardin des supplices. Paris : Ambroise Vollard, 1902. - In-4, red morocco, boards decorated with Duseuil-style gilding, ornate ribbed spine, gilded lace framing inside, red moiré silk lining and endpapers, gilded head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (Bonvoisin). Superb edition illustrated with 20 out-of-text watercolors of nudes by Auguste RODIN, lithographed by Auguste Clot. "The lithographs by Auguste Clot, based on Rodin's watercolors, combine clean, black line and color with the transparent effects of the original drawings. They embrace Octave Mirbeau's sulphurous text, between political and social denunciation and the aestheticization of violence and suffering" ("Édition limitée. Vollard, Petiet et l'estampe de maîtres", Paris: Paris Musées, 2021, p.59). Each plate is preserved in a serpente with the caption and line reproduction of the corresponding watercolor. Limited edition of 200 copies. This is one of 155 on vellum specially manufactured by Masure et Perrigot, with the watermark "Le Jardin des Supplices", bearing the number 144 and this autograph tribute from the publisher: "Hommage de l'éditeur // à Madame Etienne Clémentel // Vollard." Étienne Clémentel (1864-1936) was a politician, painter and librettist. A fine copy bound by the Versailles bookbinder Léon Bonvoisin. Hinge of the first board cracked at the level of the two lower boxes. Very good condition inside. Slight transfer of some plates. Provenance: Madame Étienne Clémentel.
