DUBOIS (Paul-Élie) - BENOÎT (Pierre). - Lot 178
DUBOIS (Paul-Élie) - BENOÎT (Pierre). L'Atlantide. Lyon: Cercle lyonnais du livre, 1934. - In-4, 310 x 240: (9 ff. first 4 blank), 302 pp. (11 ff. last 4 blank), printed cover. Leaves, filled cover, publisher's folder and slipcase. Remarkable edition illustrated with 89 color compositions by painter and illustrator Paul-Élie DUBOIS (1886-1949), interpreted on wood by Pierre Bouchet, including one frontispiece and 7 full-page illustrations. At the head of the book is a disclaimer: "The compositions illustrating this work are by the painter Paul-Élie Dubois. P.-E. Dubois was part of the official mission sent to the Hoggar in 1928. It was the first time a painter had traveled through this mysterious region. He brought back a wealth of paintings, drawings, sketches and decorative documents, and it is this body of work that the Cercle Lyonnais du Livre wanted to preserve for the future. The idea of associating Pierre Benoit's "L'Atlantide" with this documentation, and setting the brilliant fantasy of the novel against this realistic backdrop, was too seductive not to win everyone's approval, hence the present edition. Hence the present edition. The 89 illustrations are complemented by 21 ornate letters and two gilded culs-de-lampe, which are adaptations of Tuareg ornaments and decorative motifs. Limited edition of 162 copies on Arches vellum, this one among 120 nominative, specially printed for Dr. Jean Aubry. This copy does not appear to have been offered to its recipient, as it comes from the Pierre Bouchet collection. It contains a very interesting and important correspondence between Dubois and Dr. Bouchet, dating from the 30s and 40s, concerning the publication of the book, as well as his works and travels. This correspondence comprises 34 L.A.S., over 100 pages in various formats, including 5 with original sketches. There are also 4 black-and-white photographs of Dubois' works, and a 2-page in-8 letter from the painter's wife to Pierre Bouchet. The copy is also complete with the single sheet on which Pierre Bouchet warned members of the Cercle lyonnais du livre that proofs of pages 1-2-7 and 8 had been damaged in the dampening process after printing. It has also been enriched with the following items: - Continuation of replaced plates, i.e. the 4 damaged pages, as well as pages 185, 191, 188 and 247, which include different illustrations from the final version, except for page 191, which has no illustration. - Black proof of two illustrations. - Brochure Drogues et peintures, Album d'Art Contemporain by Paul-Elie Dubois, dedicated to Pierre Bouchet: "to my dear friend, the // Maître Pierre Bouchet, // admirable interpreter of // my work, this modest // souvenir. // In all friendship // P-E Dubois." - Color proof on japon of three illustrations (soiled).
