RIVARD (François-Dominique).La Gnomonique, ou l'art de faire - Lot 151
RIVARD (François-Dominique).La Gnomonique, ou l'art de faire des cadrans.Paris : Jean Desaint, Charles Saillant, 1742. - In-8, 193 x 123 : (1 f.), xiv, 336, 36 pp. 12 plates. Second edition, the first complete, of this treatise on gnomonics by the mathematician Dominique-François Rivard (1697-1778). This is obviously a reissue of the 1741 edition published under the title Traité de gnomonique, ou l'art de faire des cadrans. In the preface, Rivard explains that he has divided his work into four books to cover all aspects of sundials, including the determination of declination - a key point for vertical and inclined dials. He proposes a number of calculation methods, emphasizing both precision and simplicity, in particular the use of logarithms. He justifies his work in spite of a recent treatise on Deparcieux, believing it useful to offer a different approach. The edition is illustrated with 21 copper-engraved fold-out plates. A copy in contemporary binding, with a gilt squirrel on the spine, a characteristic attribute of the Fouquet family. Some wear, corners dulled. Attached is the 1767 edition of the same work: - La Gnomonique, ou l'art de faire des cadrans. Third Edition revised by the Author. Paris : Jean Desaint, 1767. - In-8, 198 x 124 : xv, 324, 51, 16 pp. 12 plates. Marbled calf, cold fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, marbled edges (period binding). Fourth edition under this title, reprinting the third of 1757, printed like the latter in Orléans by J. Rouzeau-Montaut. Copy in contemporary binding, enriched with an Addition Pour la description d'une méridienne à laquelle on veut joindre quelques lignes horaires (16 pp.). Some old annotations. Used rubbing, corners dulled, small split at one hinge. Provenance: A. Quincé, with handwritten bookplate.
