[BOIS (engraving)]. - Lot 148
[BOIS (engraving)]. Naval officer. S.l., 1880s. - Wood engraving 475 x 395 mm, bleached with ceruse white. Imposing matrix representing the oval portrait of an unidentified naval officer, probably an admiral or captain. He can be recognized by his uniform and his cap adorned with an anchor, the emblematic symbol of the French Navy. With an imposing format of around 50 centimeters in height, this engraving is composed of 13 assembled wooden blocks of varying sizes, suggesting its initial use for publication in the illustrated press of the XIXᵉ century. The signature ""E.A.T."" in the lower left-hand corner belongs to an engraver we have not identified. One of the peripheral blocks is missing and has been replaced by a blank block. This gap does not affect the portrait itself, but only part of the background and frame.
