Two Photo Books - David Zumbrun (1875-1941)
Peking - Art Series IV -Printed by Albertype Company, Brooklyn, [1914?]
30 photos - 240 x 290 mm
In-quarto oblong. Textured, cord-bound softcover with color illustration applied to upper cover, as originally published. One sheet of unnumbered text, followed by 30 sheets of laminated plates, consisting of sepia-tinted collotypes. The 30 large photographic plates, most measuring approximately 19.5 x 14 cm. Each montage includes an identification caption in English. The images depict major sites in and around Beijing, shortly after the end of the Qing dynasty. Although the work is undated, the preface mentions the fall of the dynasty (referred to as the "Manchu Dynasty") in 1912, and this album clearly captures the country before the Japanese invasions of the 1930s.
Temple of Heaven - Art Series III - Printed by Albertype Company, Brooklyn.
27 photos - 240 x 290 mm
First edition of this photographic guide to one of Beijing's most important imperial and religious sites. The photographer, John David Zumbrun, was the official photographer of Yuan Shikai, China's first president. The album includes photographs taken during Yuan's symbolic ceremonial visit to the Temple of Heaven in 1913 - an act that paved the way for his abortive attempt to proclaim himself the new emperor.
Italian quarto format. With 27 laminated collotypes, an introductory page and captions printed in brown. Original textured brown paper cover, as issued, held together by a brown cord threaded through perforations, front cover titled in dark brown and adorned with a laminated collotype depicting the Temple of Heaven.
