Statuette of the deity Guhyasamāja (Tib. gsang 'dus), in gil - Lot 204
Statuette of the deity Guhyasamāja (Tib. gsang 'dus), in gilded copper alloy, Tibet, 18th century
Depicted in yab-yum with his prajñā (consort), often given as Sparśavajrā according to traditions. This is a very likely representation of this deity because unlike many other tantric couples, the consort may have the same "format" (three faces and six arms) as the god, seated in vajrāsana on a double lotus. The two main arms of the deity embracing his consort carry a vajra and a ganthā (ritual bell), while the other arms are adorned with various attributes.
The consecration plaque is detached, showing that the charge is still present. It consists of prayer scrolls, various beads and an interesting silver-plated plate on which is incised a mark with a date: the fifth month, twenty-fifth day of the twenty-sixth year of the Qianlong emperor, i.e. May 1761.
