First edition at 270 copies, containing 41 biographies of actors, each accompanied by an out-of-text portrait etched on China paper by Frédéric Hillemacher. It also includes an engraved vignette at the head of the foreword. A fine copy bound by Cuzin, from the library of Léon Rattier, with his bookplate. One of 239 copies on tinted laid paper. A fine copy bound by Cuzin, from the library of Léon Rattier, with his bookplate. A small black mark on the front cover. Red half-maroquin with corners, gilt fillets, spine ribbed with gilt and mosaic motifs, gilt head, untrimmed (period binding). Revised and enlarged second edition, containing 46 biographies of comedians, compared with 41 in the original 1861 edition, as well as 46 out-of-text etched portraits by Henri Lefort, including the frontispiece portrait of Voltaire. It also includes an engraved vignette at the head of the foreword. One of 300 copies on tinted laid paper. Some wear. Dull corners.
