- 2 volumes in-8, 205 x 127 : (1 f.), xiv pp., pp. (5)-390 ; 442 pp. Half blue calf, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (period binding).
Oberlé, Les Fastes de Bacchus et de Comus, 144 ("rare and much sought-after").
First edition of one of the great classics of gastronomic literature, exploring the senses and the pleasure of eating, the work of politician and gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826).
Only 500 copies were printed anonymously at the author's expense. Brillat-Savarin did not enjoy the success of his work, dying on February 2, 1826, just two months after it went on sale.
A very fine copy in contemporary binding and first printing, with the Bourse "E" placed horizontally at the bottom of the title of the first volume.
Chateau library label at top of spines. Some foxing.
