Masonic mirror, dated 1857 - Lot 297
Masonic mirror, dated 1857 Large wall-mounted mirror in blackened wood and inlaid with architectural decor, contrasting light and dark woods. The pediment features two-tone turned elements surmounting a symmetrical composition. The upper crosspiece is engraved in ink with the date "1857" and a flaming heart, symbol of moral fervor, surmounting a Masonic allegorical representation of a human figure. The lower crossbar features a square and compass, accompanied by the letters G-A-T-V (and U at the top), probably referring to explicit Dutch Masonic symbolism: God - Arbeid - Trouw - Vrijheid (God - Work - Fidelity - Freedom). In the lower part of the frame, engraved inscription "J. B. B. - M. E. V.", interpreted as the initials of the commissioning brother and probably the abbreviation of a professional status (master glassmaker - Meester En Vensters), suggesting a personalized commission. Netherlands, mid-19ᵉ century H. 141 - L. 87.5 cm (damaged spinning top element)
