Hannah, a generous woman, 2018
Pyrography on wooden folding chair and tape
H. 77 - W. 39 - D. 38 cm (open)
Hannah, a generous woman, is one of an indefinite number of wooden folding chairs. Walk the Chair (2010), installation of 50 chairs, Collection Centre Pompidou, Paris and Walk the Bastards (2017), installation of 11 chairs Collection FRAC Franche-Comté. They belong to a large family of pyrographed chairs. These popular, worn-out chairs are a fundamental part of La Ribot's artistic work. "These chairs are part of my life. It is with them that I read the world, it is on them that I have sat to observe it and it is with them that I wish to be cremated." La Ribot, July 2018
Instructions for use: the chair must be held in the hands to manipulate it so that the engraved text can be deciphered. To read it, you need to involve your body, but also the chair. You have to fold it, open it, turn it or flip it over. You have to touch it, bend, kneel or stoop. Hannah, a generous woman starts with the beginning of the sentence, marked by a strip of blue tape.
Pyrographed text:
Hannah was what you might call a generous woman. She always offered her friend's steak to her girlfriends, the neighbour's apples to other neighbours and her lover's bed to her best friend.
