Pierre GLEIZES (Born 1956) - Lot 88
Pierre GLEIZES (Born 1956) Spanish whaler, 1980 Black and white photograph Signed on the passe-partout lower right, countersigned, dated, annotated "At the heart of the action to save the whales... Spain 1980". 29 x 39 cm (on view) June 18, 1980, our "longest" day. After a night of pursuit, the Rainbow Warrior intercepts the whaler IBSA III in Spain's exclusive economic zone. The zodiacs are launched and the harassment begins. We saved three whales in the process. Founder of Greenpeace International's photo department and first Greenpeace employee in France, Pierre Gleizes has photographed the movement's actions over a period of thirty-seven years. After seven years with Associated Press, he became a freelance photographer in 1991. Now living on a boat, this ardent environmentalist, pacifist and lover of the sea is a key witness to the Greenpeace epic.
