The Death of Demosthenes
Original canvas (E. Chenoz)
114 x 146 cm
(old restorations and missing pieces)
Our painting is from the Prix de Rome historical painting competition of 1879, won by Alfred-Henri Bramtot, a pupil of Bouguereau (painting at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts). Doucet won the Prix de Rome in 1880 with La reconnaissance d'Ulysse et de Télémaque dans la cabane d'Eumée.
Our painting shows the moment when Demosthenes, poisoned, staggers and throws an accusing finger at Archias.
A tracing taken from Doucet's sketch is kept at the ENSBA.
