Small shelf in black and cinnabar-red lacquered wood on a ba - Lot 163
Small shelf in black and cinnabar-red lacquered wood on a base, China, 18th century
Rectangular in shape, with a solid black lacquered base and small open sides, it comprises three levels with a total of eight compartments and a small drawer at the front. The slender uprights are carved with a leiwen frieze repeated on the top of the cabinet to surround a panel decorated with a geometrical flower motif in a hexagon framed by a frieze of small rhombuses. Only a few of the carved frames with lotus flowers and foliage remain, while the front of the lower drawer is decorated with a rhombus frieze. The small gilded copper alloy latches are cicada-shaped. It stands on four legs linked by a cinnabar lacquer spacer carved with a diamond-shaped frieze and embellished with lingzhi half-heads. The base is incised with stylized lotus flowers and foliage on the top, while the edges feature leiwen and lozenge frieze motifs.
