Wooden netsuke depicting Okame, Japan, 19th century - Lot 291
Wooden netsuke depicting Okame, Japan, 19th century
In katabori style, Okame hides her smile behind the sleeve of her kimono and strokes the long nose of a Tengu mask. Okame, known as Otafuku, is the divinity of cheerfulness and good humor. In Japanese iconography, she is also particularly linked to netsuke, an erotic evocation revealed after her famous dance to bring Amaterasu out of her cave.
