Wooden kappa netsuke, Japan, Meiji period - Lot 288
Wooden kappa netsuke, Japan, Meiji period Katabori-style, the seated kappa is holding a cucumber in his hands. His two teeth are made of bone, and the cucumber is made of green-stained bone. Two himotoshi have been cut into the imitation turtle shell scales covering his back. Signed under one of its lower limbs Chokusaï. In popular Japanese belief, this mischievous aquatic yokai was known to abduct young children playing in the water and devour them. He could only be removed by offering a cucumber, as this is the only food he prefers to human flesh. H. 3.6 cm - L. 2.7 cm
