Presented at the 1867 Salon under the title Le Messie, the original version of this Virgin and Child with its innovative composition was a great success. Napoleon III acquired the marble version as a gift for the church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, where it is still preserved today in the Vierge's axial chapel. In 1880, Gustave Doré was inspired by Christ's attitude, with arms outstretched, prefiguring his Passion, for the Virgin and Child surmounting the tomb of actress Alice Ozy. In 1920, Antoine Bourdelle followed suit with his Vierge à l'Offrande. The model was then taken up and distributed in terracotta editions from 1883, and in ceramics by the Manufacture de Sèvres.
