VOLTAIRE - Lot 29
VOLTAIRE La Henriade, poem, followed by some other poems by Voltaire. [Khel] : imprimerie de la Société littéraire-typographique, 1789. - In-4, (2 ff.), 624 pp. 1 portrait, 10 plates. Green morocco, gilt roulette framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges (period binding). Luxurious edition printed on wove paper in Kehl by Beaumarchais. As Cohen states (1028), it "was to be part of a Voltaire in 40 in-4 volumes that Beaumarchais intended to publish." It is illustrated with a portrait of Henri IV engraved by Tardieu after Frans Pourbus, and 10 engraved plates after drawings by Jean-Michel Moreau dit le jeune. A fine copy in contemporary green morocco, with the engraved title of Moreau's suite. From the library of Count François Potocki (1788-1853). (Spine and edges of boards faded, rubbed in use, lower headband and one corner restored, headband restoration still fragile, snag to headband. A few rare traces of light wetness).
