[GÉNARD (François)] L'École de l'Homme, ou parallèle des portraits du siècle, & des Tableaux de l'Écriture Sainte. Ouvrage Moral, Critique & Anecdotique Paris [Noyon: Rocher], 1752. - 3 parts in one volume, in-8, olive morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the covers, ornate smooth spine, gilt inner border, gilt edges (period binding). First edition, also found at the Amsterdam and London addresses. It was actually printed by Rocher in Noyon. The work was written by polemicist François Génard (1722-1764), and was immediately condemned. "One noticed in this production covered impieties of the passages of the Scripture. The portraits of Louis XV, the Marquise de Pompadour, Prince Edward, etc., were particularly prominent. The police seized the work and searched for the author; he was arrested and taken to the Bastille on March 10, 1752" (Quérard, III, p. 302). Each part contains the "natural key to the portraits". A fine copy in contemporary olive morocco. (Spine slightly faded. Missing tear and text damage to folio B3 in the first part).
