[INCUNABULUM] - DANTE ALIGHIERI
Commedia
Venice: Matteo Capcasa, November 29, 1493. - In-folio, (10 ff.), ff. II-CCXCIX with foliation errors [a10 a7 (out of 8 mq a1), b-u8 x7 y-z8 &8 A-N8 O4 (out of 6 mq O1 and O6). Blond calf, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges (19th-century binding).
BMC V, 484 - Polain, 126. - Goff D-34.
Fifth illustrated edition of Dante's Divine Comedy, printed in Roman type in Venice by Matteo Capcasa (14..-1495).
It includes commentaries by the Neoplatonist humanist Cristoforo Landino (1524-1492), which first appeared in the Florentine edition of 1481. But what sets it apart is its illustration, comprising 2 full-page woodcuts (out of 3) that open the Cantica and 97 vignettes in the text, attributed to the Venetian miniaturist Master Pico or Pico, best known for the illuminated manuscript of Pliny's Natural History created for Giovanni Pico della Mirandolina. These are the same figures that Capcasa used in his March 3, 1492 edition.
Missing is the first leaf of the second quire a, which would have included on the verso the first large engraving introducing Hell. Also missing are the text leaf O1 and the last leaf O6, which included only the signature register on the front. The coat of arms at the bottom of the two large woodcuts has been drawn in ink.
A fine copy in 19th-century binding. It has been completely washed, which explains the lightening of the ink on some pages.
(Spine faded, some wear and tear. The two upper corners are slightly depressed).
