CAZOTTE (Jacques) - Lot 4
CAZOTTE (Jacques) Le Diable amoureux. Spanish novella. Naples [Paris: Lejay], 1772. - In-8, frontispiece, viij, 144 pp. 6 plates. Half marbled basane, smooth spine decorated, red edges (period binding). Cohen, 212. Rare first edition of this libertine tale, considered one of the author's masterpieces. It is illustrated with 6 astonishing anonymous engravings, relatively modern for their time. These are figure-charges engraved according to Cohen by Moreau after drawings by Marillier. "It's a satire on the mania that existed at the time for illustrating everything, even the most serious works" (Cohen). The edition also includes an engraved music plate. A good copy. (Corners slightly dulled.)
