Suite of nine chairs stamped JACOB FRERES RUE MESLEE - Lot 270
Suite of nine chairs stamped JACOB FRERES RUE MESLEE
in mahogany and molded mahogany veneer, with banded back with double molded scrolls, trapeze-shaped seats resting on ringless baluster-turned front legs, and Etruscan saber-turned back legs.
Decorated with marquetry featuring an antique scene on the backband, and foliate scrolls inlaid in a later period, probably Charles X.
Directoire-Consulat period
H. 89 cm - W. 46 cm - D. 41 cm
(accidents to the backrest, chips and minor damage to some crosspieces, reinforcing brackets on all)
These nine chairs come from a larger set of eighteen. Only nine were acquired by the current owner's parents between 1923 and 1932.
The shape of the backrest is derived from the so-called "Klismsos" chairs, found on antique vases and brought up to date by the painter David during the Directoire and Consulate periods.
Other similar chairs existed at Malmaison, and can be seen on one of the watercolors commissioned from the painter Loeillot in 1826 by Eugène de Beauharnais' widow, who wished to preserve the memory of the château's main rooms.
La Malmaison was transformed in 1800 by Percier & Fontaine, and it is possible that the design of these chairs was by Percier.
We should also mention a series of chairs of the same type in the Emperor's library, Musée national du château de Fontainebleau, n°inv. F2014.6, stamped by Jacob Frères.
And, an example preserved at the Mobilier national, inv. no. GMT 4607l.
Jacob Frères: a partnership between Georges Jacob's two sons from 1796 to 1803; Georges II and François Honoré Georges Jacob were frequently called upon by the imperial furniture guard to supply both seating sets and cabinetry, the preparatory drawings for which were often donated by Percier et Fontaine.
