* Zoum WALTER (Ixelles 1902 - Paris 1974). Tree trunks Pastel and gouache Annotated lower right in ink "Z.V.D.I / 28.1.27". Annotated on verso of frame, "N°43 - Troncs d'arbres 25x35". On verso, landscape sketch in black pencil 26.5 x 18 cm (on view) Zoum van den Eeckhoudt is the daughter of painter Jean Vanden Eeckhoudt, a friend of Simon Bussy in Roquebrune. It was here that Zoum met Simon Bussy and his wife Dorothy, with whom she became very close. Simon Bussy's art fascinated her and inspired her first pastels. Our pastel, monogrammed "ZVDE" and dated 1924, is highly evocative of her early career as an artist. Our pastel is signed with her maiden name, as she did not marry François Walter until 1927, whom she met at the Bussy home.
