Attributed to Shiba Kōkan (1747-1818), also... - Lot 218 - Nicolas Nouvelet Commissaire-priseur
Attributed to Shiba Kōkan (1747-1818), also called Suzuki Harushige Two young women and a child in front of a gunpowder store, Ca. 1770-1771 Chban format, 27.6x19.6 cm Nishiki-e print, ink and polychrome on paper representing a young woman accompanying a child to his mother so that she can breastfeed him, we can see that the scene is in front of a store whose sign indicates a cosmetic powder dealer. At the top is a waka style poem: 於しなべて 亭世王春奈らじ 朝日影乃ど けきなつに かすみ たなびく Oshi nabete Yowa Haru naraji Asahi kage nodo Keki natsu ni Kasumi tanabiku It seems around That everywhere spring is coming to an end In the morning light of a serene summer Floats the mist This print signed Harunobu is attributed to his student Shiba Kōkan who during his career and after the death of his master Suzuki Harunobu made prints in the same style, we can even say in imitation of him, he signed Harunobu and then Harushige. His style is slightly different from that of his master in the way he executed the young women, whose bodies are more slender, but also in the calligraphy of the signature. For a similar model see Clarence Buckingham Collection, Art Institute Chicago. Good condition, some wear and stains, probably slightly cut. Provenance: Jeannette Ostier Gallery
