Italian school of the XIXth c View of the colossal statue of St Charles Borromeo Watercolor 28x41,3 cm The Colossus of St. Charles Borromeo is a statue of more than thirty meters high located on the Sacred Mount of Arona in Italy. It is dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo (1538-1584), archbishop of Milan in 1565, beatified in 1602 and canonized in 1610. Completed in 1698, the particularity of this statue lies in the technique used for its realization, unprecedented for the time, that of embossed copper plates installed on a rigid supporting structure. This was the technique that inspired Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) to create the Statue of Liberty.
