Vase clock - Lot 273
Vase clock in chased and gilded bronze, white marble, the dial inscribed in a terminal in the form of a covered vase, supported by a laurel garland held by a ribbon knot, the lid surmounted by a burst pomegranate, the body flanked by handles in the form of satyr masks topped with intertwined snakes, the fluted pedestal surrounded by a laurel frieze, resting on a base with a grained laurel and rosette motif, finished with a projecting pedestal supported by toupee feet. White enamel dial signed "Legay A Paris" indicating the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals. Suspension of Brocot type, balance wheel. Louis XVI style, second half of the 19th century H. 46 cm - W: 26 cm - D: 27 cm (missing the stamp, the key, the back glass) This elegant vase clock was made after a watercolor drawing, now preserved in the Doucet Library, under the number 143. As the drawing is not signed, Hans Ottomeyer attributes it to the famous bronze worker Robert Osmond on the basis of a number of affinities with the famous vase clock signed by the latter and adorning the cartonnier of Lalive de Jully now preserved in the Musée Condé at the Château de Chantilly (cf. H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, Vol. I, p. 154-155 fig. 3.1.1 and 3.1.2). Among the comparable examples of the period that have come up for public sale in the last few years we recall: Artcurial - Paris 12 December 2016 - Lot 112.
