A set of three sumi-e paintings on paper depicting galloping - Lot 241
A set of three sumi-e paintings on paper depicting galloping horses in the style of Xu Beihong. - The first bears the inscription: 志在千里,癸亥夏于长安. It can be translated as: Ambition stretches for a thousand li, (painted) in the summer of the year of the Gengzi (癸亥), in Chang'an". This is a zodiacal date from the Chinese sexagesimal calendar, which probably corresponds to the year 1983. It is signed with a two-character seal 柏野 Bai ye Size: 60x37 cm - The second bears the inscription: 辛巳八月十日第二次长沙会战,忧心为焚,或者仍有前次之结果也 企予望之,悲鸿時客檳城 壬戌年秋摹 It can be roughly translated as "The second Changsha clash, on the tenth day of the eighth month of the year Xinsi (辛巳 1941). Anxiously, I fear it will end the same way as last time. I hope the opposite, Xu Beihong, sad guest in Penang, Copy made in the autumn of the Renxu year (壬戌 1982)." This is a copy of artist Xu Beihong's famous painting titled 奔马图 Ben ma tu "Galloping Horse", with a similar illustrative inscription alluding to the artist's state of mind during the Sino-Japanese war. It is signed with a two-character seal, perhaps 恺賓 Kai Bin. Size: 69.5x42.5 cm - The third depicts three galloping horses. It is titled "Painting depicting three horses 三骏图 and dated 一九ハ三夏 - summer 1983 . It is signed with a two-character seal Jiang Nan 江南 Size: 33.5 x 68 cm
