Brown patina bronze incense burner representing a temari* ball resting on three other small balls, the whole set on a truncated triangular base decorated in light relief with stylized floral motifs reminiscent of the iconography of certain mon. Inventory number painted in white on the lid and Daily Mail letterhead in Paris Paris indicating the name and address of a certain Comte de Chabannes. *The temari (手毬/手鞠?, literally "hand ball"), originally from China and introduced to Japan between 1400 and 1500, was originally a child's toy (a ball) made from the silk remnants of old kimonos.
